Winnipeg's Water

The water we drink

1919 was not only the year of the General Strike and the tail end of the Spanish Influenza, but the year  also saw Winnipeg getting a new source water. Here is an article about the creation of the Shoal Aqueduct.

Here is a newer article about Shoal lake and our source of water Read at least up to "A Bridge not Built."

With the readings above and the class discussion, fill out the sheet Winnipeg's Water. Below are some more resources.

Find a song whose lyrics you find to be particularly artistic and is teacher approved. Perhaps you can get a song from here

Put into Kidblog the name of your song, what the song is about, and at least 3 examples of figurative language in the song.

Now put the song into you movie program and find pictures to go with the lyrics, as show below.

Also below is an example, from Evan.

Anxiety

 Anxiety

By Michaels

My friends, they wanna take me to the movies

I tell 'em to get lost, I'm holding hands with my depression
And right when I think I've overcome it
Anxiety starts kicking in to teach that stuff a lesson
Oh, I try my best just to be social
I make all these plans with friends and hope they call and cancel
Then I overthink about the things I'm missing
Now I'm wishing I was with 'em 2
Feel like I'm always apologizing for feeling
Like I'm out of my mind when I'm doing just fine
And my exes all say that I'm hard to deal with
And I admit it, yeah
But all my friends, they don't know what it's like, what it's like
They don't understand why I can't sleep through the night
I've been told that I could take something to fix it
Damn, I wish it, I wish it was that simple, ah
All my friends they don't know what it's like, what it's like 4
Always wanted to be one of those people in the room
That says something and everyone puts their hand up
Like, "If you're sad put your hand up
If you hate someone, put your hand up
If you're scared, put your hand up"
Feel like I'm always apologizing for feeling
Like I'm out of my mind when I'm doing just fine
And my exes all say that I'm hard to deal with
And I admit it, it's true 6
But all my friends, they don't know what it's like, what it's like
They don't understand why I can't sleep through the night
And I thought that I could take something to fix it
Damn, I wish it, I wish it was that simple, ah
All my friends they don't know what it's like, what it's like
I got all these thoughts, running through my mind
All the damn time and I can't seem to shut it off
I think I'm doing fine most of the time
I think that I'm alright, but I can't seem to shut it off
I got all these thoughts, running through my mind
All the damn time and I can't seem to shut it off
I think I'm doing fine most of the time
I say that I'm alright, but I can't seem to shut it off
Shut it, shut it, yeah 8
But all my friends, they don't know what it's like, what it's like
They don't understand why I can't sleep through the night
I've been told that I could take something to fix it
Damn, I wish it, I wish it was that simple, ah
All my friends they don't know what it's like, what it's like
Li-i-i-i-ike
What it's like, what it's like
Hmm-mm-mm, mmm
What it's like
I love this song 10

When I am an Old Woman

When I am an Old Woman

Warning

(When I Am An Old Woman)

Poem by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausage at a go
Or only bread and pickles for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends for dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now
So people who know me are not surprised
When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.

Supporting the War Effort

With no Internet, television, or radio, posters were a popular way to advertise. Here are advertisements by the Canadian Government to gain support of the First World War effort. Besides enlisting to fight, some of the ways people supported the War effort was by having Victory Gardens and by lending the government money, Victory Bonds, to fight the War.

The Halifax Explosion

During the First World War, the biggest explosion in the history of the World actually happened in Canada. Many people were actually vaporized. Then their was the tsunami cause by the explosion, and a winter storm the day afterwards. Compounding the problems was that most of Canada didn't know.   See a recreation of what happened here
